Rilo is a Chrome extension that reads web pages and PDFs out loud, highlighting each sentence as it speaks so you can follow along — or look away.

• Articles Finds the actual article on a page and skips the navigation, ads and comments.
• PDFs Renders the real pages locally and reads them in order. Files are never uploaded.
• Read-along highlighting The sentence being spoken is highlighted in place, without altering the page.
• Picks up where you stopped Your position is remembered per page, even after a reload.
• Notes while you read Select any text and save it. Notes stay in your browser.
• Adjustable speed 0.5× to 2×, changeable mid-sentence.

Privacy in one paragraph

Sentences you ask Rilo to read are sent to Rilo's server and on to our speech provider purely to be turned into audio. PDF files are never uploaded — only the sentence text is. Your notes and reading position never leave your browser. Reading aloud requires signing in with Google, using the narrowest scope available (openid), so Rilo receives an opaque account identifier and never your email address or name. Nothing is sold, and nothing is used to train AI models.

Why sign-in is needed

Speech synthesis is paid for per character. Without a way to tell one user from another, the service would be usable by anyone who found its address — at our expense, and to the point of breaking it for everyone. Signing in with Google is the least invasive way we found to make that work, and it asks for no access to your Google data.
